After docking in Skagway, Alaska, we rented a car and took a drive northward on the South Klondike Highway. The highway runs 98 miles through British Columbia and the Yukon to the Alaska Highway 10 miles east of Whitehorse. Each curve in the the road brought jaw-dropping scenery, from towering granite peaks to pristine lakes. We travelled about 60 miles, into Yukon Territory (“Larger Than Life – Plus Grande Que Nature”), before needing to turn around to get back to the ship. We were but a speck along this amazing highway surrounded by nature’s magnificent beauty in all its glory.

Cybele, so much to see and experience in Alaska, and we only saw a small part of it. We didn’t make it as far north as Denali, and I hear it’s spectacular. If we ever get the chance to return, that’s where I’ll head. I hope you get the chance! Thanks so much for your comment 🙂

The only thing that made it “exciting” to turn around and head back was the promise of cruising to Sawyer Glacier the following morning, Patti 🙂 Thanks so much for your comments!

Hi Stacy!
I absolutely love the pictures and their sharpness. They look breathtaking! May I ask what camera, lens and settings you’re using? Especially for the 1st one?
Thanks and have a great weekend!

Thanks so much, Hanni! I’m on my iPad at the moment and can’t pull up all the info. It was with a Nikon D90. I promise to get back to you with the rest of it!

Hanni, I used my Nikkor 18.0-200.0 mm f/3.5-5.6 lens at 18mm, 1/2000 sec @ f/3.5, ISO 320. I was in shutter priority mode (I had been taking photos from a moving car) and I must not have changed my settings when we quickly pulled off to the side of the road so that I could take this shot. (I was just beginning to experiment with getting off of Automatic.) As it turned out, though, the original photo was exposed wonderfully for the highlights (sky and mountains); it was just way underexposed for the shadows, which I dealt with in post-processing.

I like the first picture because the road and lake lead you in. THe second picture is good and works really well with the theme of scale.

Thanks, Ben. The first photo is definitely the stronger in terms of composition, but as you recognized, the second one is stronger at indicating scale. Had to include both 🙂
