Highlighting the creative magic behind post-processed photos
Before we get to the after-before galleries, just a reminder that today’s post reveals the August ABFriday One Photo Focus photo! What is One Photo Focus? It’s the first ABFriday of each month when all participants edit the same photo. Fun? You betcha! Check out July’s 1PF!
In a nutshell, here’s how it works:
- The photo to be edited is revealed in the ABF post two weeks in advance.
- If you’d like to join in, email me at visualventuring@gmail.com. I will send you links to the full-sized RAW and jpeg files. Download the one you wish.
- Email me your “after” image no later than Wednesday midnight EST, two days prior to the post. For August, the post is scheduled for August 7th, so I need your image Wednesday, August 5th.
A time zone converter and all the important submission details are on the After-Before Friday Forum page, as are the details for participating in “regular” ABFriday posts. Come along and join us in one or the other (or both) – we’re a fun-loving group!
August’s One Photo Focus Photo!
Submitted by Katie Prior — Drawing with Light
Now back to our regularly scheduled ABFriday post with all the creative after-before photos submitted this week!
My submission: This week, I have chosen a photo from my June trip to New York City, where I had the good fortune to see “Something Rotten” on Broadway. If you are in the city, run, don’t walk, to see this absolutely over-the-top hysterical musical with it’s showstopping score and uber-talented cast! As for my post-processing, for once I am processing a photo completely in Lightroom Creative Cloud.

Submitted by Rajiv Chopra — rajivchopra
Rajiv says: Mother India! My daughter took this picture while we were stuck behind cattle on the highway. I had some fun with it.
Submitted by Klara — Sliku svoju ljubim II
Klara says: This time I tried something different (than the usual Lightroom processing) – out of bounds effect. Photoshop is not my strong point and I wouldn’t be able to pull this off on my own (so no explanation of the editing process), I followed step by step instructions from my favorite Gavin, Gavin Hoey (whom I credited in the post, along with the link to his tutorial video clip).
Submitted by Katie Prior — Drawing with Light
Katie says: This month I have been trying my hand at mixing up two images to create a kind of blurred effect…
Submitted by Emilio Pasquale — Photos by Emilio
Emilio says: No crazy story behind this one, really. Just, when I saw it I didn’t have my camera with me so had to rely on my iPhone.
Submitted by Amy — The World Is a Book
Amy says: I processed the photo through LR and Color Efex Pro 4.
Submitted by Robin Kent — PhotographybyKent
Robin says: It seems that everyone is talking about the new Dehaze tool in Adobe Camera Raw 9.1 but I am more excited about the “Merge to Panorama” capability that has been added to the same Adobe Camera Raw dialog pane. Here is an example of how it works.
Submitted by Loré Dombaj — Snow’s Fissures and Fractures
Loré says: I just wanted to make it just the way I remember that lovely afternoon in May. And I used one of my tricks, I wonder how many of you would guess it correctly. No flipping this time. 😀
Submitted by Mary Hone — Tales from the Backroad
Submitted by Kirsten Aufhammer — Kirsten Aufhammer Photography
Kirsten says: This was picture was taken on the side of a busy highway. The horse was there by himself on a lot that was for sale. We discovered he was not alone when a rooster chased us off the property. Who knew roosters made such good dogs?!?
Submitted by Benjamin Rowe — Aperture64
Ben says: This picture was taken while on my Holiday In Cornwall. Taken from Rock side of the Camel River looking towards the Doom Bar.

Great video Stacy! It’s really amazing what detail you brought out from the sky and the shadows and turned a meh picture into a wow image! 🙂
I’m working my way, slowly, round the other ABF posts when I win the battle of “who gets a turn on the ipad”!, but I’m enjoying them all so far. 😀

Great set of contributions once again, Stacy. I was a little slow in getting to them but all were interesting and, as usual, I picked up a few new tricks from the posts of the participants. I really liked your transformation of the original image. I know how hard it is to get a full range of detail in those high contrast situations so common to NYC.

Thanks, Robin. I was delighted to find so much captured information in the image!

I love how you were able to get so much detail in the sky. And how you were able to open up the rest of it. Keep this up and you’re apt to steal my title. Guru? You!

Aww. Clearly we have a mutual admiration society going, Emilio 🙂 I credit the Fuji for capturing all that wonderful detail that was there just waiting for me! Thanks for always being so supportive 🙂

I love your editing this week Stacy. I used Lightroom a lot. Sometimes that is all that is needed.

Thanks so much, Raewyn. And you’re right. I probably could do most of my post in LR without using external editors. Maybe that’s a challenge I’ll take up for myself 😉

I tried to leave the comment, but my Mozilla crashed, so I have no idea if it went through. I watched the video and enjoyed your explanation. The after looks so stunning, it all comes together so nicely.
Visited other participants…crazy skills, people. Crazy skills. I need to do my homework. 😀

Hi, Sarah. I will be sending you (and others) the links to the images for August’s One Photo Focus later today and you’ll have until Wednesday, August 5 to get your edited version back to me. As far as the regular ABF posts go, there is no general notification, just a calendar on the ABF Forum page that you can access directly by going to that page or through the sidebar on any of my post pages. My apologies for any confusion. 😦

Laurie? Is that my new nickname or is auto-correct messing with you again? 😛 I see that my comment went through, so now you’ll have to reply to my two comments. Three, if we count this one. :O

Yikes! Definitely autocorrect on autopilot 😉
