Now, on to this week’s ABFriday galleries, with many thanks to all those participating!

My submission

This photo was among the first series of images I took with a rented Fuji X-T1. I wanted a deep depth of field and some movement of the pitcher and batter. So I shot at f/22 in shutter priority at 1/60 sec and tweaked the ISO to 640 to compensate for some underexposure on the field. While the image is a bit soft (lots of moving people in the stands), if you zoom in you can see the swish of the bat and movement at the pitcher’s hand – which is what I was aiming for. As for the dynamic range of the image, it needed some help in post, but nothing huge. I was really pleased with how the Fuji performed.

In post, I used my old standbys of LR CC and Nik Color Efex Pro (having some fun with the GND filter and a few control points for the sky).

Robin says: In keeping with the theme of last week—a “Parking Lot Shot,” this week’s ABFriday Image was taken from yet another parking lot on the same trip.  But this parking lot was located in western Montana.  Once again, there seems to be Photoshop Cheating, but the truth can only be learned by clicking here.

Katie says: Last week there was an arts festival at our local village and I took a rare opportunity to visit the roof space of the old textile mill. When we stepped into it I was totally amazed, it is such a beautiful space. As the area was bathed in bright sunlight, but had lots of dark shadows, I thought I would try out the new HDR feature in LR6 and took three bracketed exposures. See how I got on here.

Nancy says: As you can see, this image started almost completely black. I used the RAW converter in Photoshop to gently lighten the image and enhance it. Then I removed a couple of blemishes and added an Iris blur to draw focus to her profile.

Michelle says:  I helped a photographer friend shoot a wedding this last weekend. It was nice to get back into the groove, but man, I forgot how much work it was! There was one shot I really liked but we were fighting the wind. It kept blowing it into the bride’s face. So, in effort to make the shot usable, I tried a little Photoshopping magic, which turned more into Photoshop hard work…

Emilio says: This is the one time even my wife is happy I didn’t listen to her. I was leaning against the car which was parked on the side of the road, just setting up my shot of this old gas station. Lynn (the little woman) wanted me to wait until this girl and her dog passed. I got about 6 shots off before they entered the frame, and half a dozen more after they walked through my set up. And which shot do you think we both selected as our favorite?

  2. This is boring! Week after week I say the same things, commend you on another job well done. Again, subtle but well worth while. And nit-picky? I love when you’re nit-picky. It makes me feel so much better about myself!!!

    • Then you should be feeling really good about yourself, Emilio 😀 I am so nit-picky that I drive myself crazy sometimes (well, actually, a lot of the time!) My poor kids seem to have inherited that trait from me, Lord help ’em …

  3. Great job, Stacy. The final result was excellent. I thought this ABFriday was a really strong week with all of the contributions. I hope the graduation ceremony was a great success. It appears that the weather cooperated nicely.

  6. Great work Stacy, your editing has done a great job of bringing out the colours. You’ve captured the pitcher in a great stance, that can’t have been easy! I know what you mean about having to sit still at big games like these, a camera really helps!! Hope you had a wonderful weekend celebrating your daughters graduation, you must be so proud! 🙂

  15. I love the shot Stacy. Sports photography is so hard to get right. The speed and lighting and to get all that with the view of the stadium too – bravo!
