Whale watching – an amazing adventure in the waters of the Inside Passage north of Juneau, Alaska. Looking from the back of our boat, a view of the vast blue waters of Saginaw Channel, with Shelter Island and the snow-capped Chilkat Mountains in the distance. And, yes, we did see whales!

Years ago – before digital photography ! – I went on the Alaska ferries on the Inside Passage. I didn’t see any whales though. I was too busy being seasick when we were in open water.

Oh, I really don’t mean to laugh at your troubles, but I have to admit, your comment absolutely made me laugh out loud 😀 That being said, a large number of the passengers on the large ship we took to sail up the Inside Passage had the same problem as you. I had done my research, however, and came equipped with long-acting dramamine, which my family took a few hours before we were scheduled to hit the 19-foot swells! Worked like a charm and we were free to enjoy the on-board amenities without having to deal with long lines 😉

Thanks, Cee. I was ecstatic that the photo turned out – it was a very small boat (only 6 of us onboard) and, as you can image, there was a lot of movement going on 🙂 One of my favorite memories from this trip!

I’d love to visit Alaska and hop over the International Date Line on New Years Eve to see in the New Year and then hop on over again to see the New Year in again 🙂

Ha, puns are most welcome here 🙂 The guide we had actually grew up on Shelter Island and does spend every day living with this view. I can’t imagine what it would be like in the middle of the winter when the weather is incredibly cold and there is more darkness than light. But in the summer, it’s amazing. Love your idea of seeing in the new year twice! Thanks, Hugh 🙂

It was an amazing experience, Bruce, to be surrounded by nothing but water and snow-capped mountains as far as the eye could see. Truly God’s country. It occurred to me I should have posted at least one picture of a whale, though 😉 Thanks so much for your comment!

I’m not sure I could pick a favorite between these two days, but the sled dogs were absolutely gorgeous and the puppies, adorable!
