Weekly Photo Challenge: Monument

The “monument” challenge. Yup, I just had to post three Eiffel Tower photos. (Visit my second submission on the Lincoln Memorial.)

Taken in July 2010, I captured this shot after having a wonderful dinner with my husband and daughter at 58 Tour Eiffel on the Tower’s 1st Floor, 58 meters above ground – hence, the name. For those of us who are metric-challenged, that’s about 190 feet. We had made our way to the windy, and a bit chilly, lower observation deck on the second floor. No metrics here; just think 37-story building. The City of Lights at night. What a glorious site: The Palais de Chaillot, Sacré-Coeur, Arc de Triomphe, the Champ du Mars looking towards Ecole Militaire, the Hôtel des Invalides, the tour boats from Bateaux Mouches floating down the Seine.

The Champ du Mars is alive with people late into the summer evening.

We were also lucky enough to be on the deck when the hourly light show began: 20,000 bulbs (5,000 on each side) glitter for 5 minutes every hour on the hour, from nightfall until 1 a.m. Magnificent!

    • Oh, lucky you being there just last spring! I, too, want to go back. I have even begun to restudy French with the goal of going back once I feel like I can actually communicate a bit. I’ve got a ways to go 😀 Thanks for your kind comment, Connie!
